I-DLE Moves On and You Should, Too
(G)I-DLE drops ‘G’ to become ‘i-dle'

Hey y’all,
Cube Entertainment’s moneymaker has answered to “idol-no-G” for so long, I honestly almost missed why a letter would have to be dropped from their name to begin with. G’s move in silence (oh my gosh, I did a corny joke… please advert your eyes as I walk into oncoming Internet traffic) and the ladies have referred to themselves without the G since at least 2022, so the lil’ logo change is something.
The greatest something of speculation surrounds the previous member Seo Soojin and the perception (by some) that this formal change is to erase her.
Y’all, please. The young woman’s been gone since 2021 and the contributions are archived — good, bad, and all that’s in between. It’s a job and this is another step towards the company (the ladies, not Cube exclusively) making moves to reflect their desired direction.
I think it’s smart. I mean, at what point can netizens let reality seep in? None of us enjoy seeing our favorite groups lose members (unless it’s truly warranted. I mean truly, truly, truly warranted.) but at some point we have to accept the changes. A group can be OT-pick-a-number in your heart until your last fandom breath but the business of being an idol should go on.
Let’s see what happens, yes? There’s already enough chatter every comeback for these ladies that the leader needs to relinquish the reigns, or that the concepts from teasers equate to a flop, and then they do what needs to be done and history suddenly rewrites from netizen’s pens and keyboards.
And this isn’t a new strategy after all. Rebranding is a strategy that can lead to greater stability and other successes in business. If you’ve been around my “brand” long enough, then you’ve seen Mac the Koala go from wearing an orange shirt and holding a smartphone, to being a floating head, to how he looks now. My mascot has been consistent throughout my time on the Internet but he’s adjusted to the times and type of messaging I want to convey.
A group can be OT-pick-a-number in your heart until your last fandom breath but the business of being an idol should go on.
If you feel like getting nerdy about this a bit, then here’s a long read about 13 of the most successful rebrands. (Many rebranding attempts go from elaborate design to something simple. If you’re into graphic design and whatnot, you might hate it so much. Just a buffer. But even I-DLE did it!)
And, if you want to be reminded about how being an idol is a job, then peep the repost below from group member Shuhua.
[March 13, 2025] Reposting from YouTube channel TheeWoo, as translated from Shuhua's Marie Claire Taiwan interview this year.
🗣️: How do you view your job? How would you define being an IDOL?
💭: I believe that idols and fans should have a relationship of mutual understanding. You must understand that idols are packaged and presented in a way that each person has their own character; the person you see on the screen will definitely have a different side to them in private. Yet at the same time, the relationship between idols and fans is just like the orders of fate; amid a vast sea of individuals, you’ve noticed traits you like in this person and therefore become naturally attracted, as if we were destined to find each other. That’s why it’s important to be a fan with a sense of rationality. Don’t treat idols like they’re your everything in life. The best kind of relationship is one of mutual understanding and respect.
🗣️ Have you ever heard some fans feel empty and overthink or experience self-doubt after meeting their idols?
💭: Actually, my past self used to experience that empty feeling after accomplishing something that brought me a greater sense of achievement, like (but not only) concerts. But later on, I understood that it’s because you’ve reached the peak of some sort of happiness, so naturally you’ll experience an emotional disparity. There is a quote that I keep in mind, which says: You’ll never be satisfied unless you’re grateful for everything you have now.'
What do you think: will Soojin return? Does her solo debut mean nothing? Does any of it matter at this point? Let me know with a comment or a social media message.
